Tundra Archives and Other Art

My day job takes me north in summers to Iqaluit and it is a very different world there; something of a barren land until you look closer.  The vegetation is diverse, often luscious, punctuated by massive rocks and outcroppings of all shapes that are in turn covered with lichens and microbial crusts. In the autumn (around about the end of August), the colors can be blazingly bright, contrasting at very small scales to a dizzying effect at times, and they are all more or less at your feet.   Nothing much grows above ankle height.

I use the term “Tundra archives” for two reasons: First, because climate change is clearly visible to the people living in the north and how exactly the change will affect the natural vegetation is still probably a crap shoot (even for all the studies), but what is sure is that it will change, and; Second, I use the term because painting itself and painting landscapes in particular is a fairly antiquated expression in this digital age of global networks, wireless everything and media hyperactivity.

The other art includes other recent landscapes but also work from a time when I painted mostly figures and other lively beings, so in that respect they are also a little archival as well.   There are more of these in the works as the imagination is unbounded.
